FROG, BY ANNE FADIMAN.

i’ve read many fantastic personal essays, and this is a recent one that made a strong impression on me (read: made me tear up in a crowded cafe). it’s a long-form obituary, a love letter, a confession, a research paper, an evaluation of the ethical dilemma that is having a pet. it inspired me to watch several videos on how to care for african clawed frogs, during which i teared up AGAIN. the prose is effortless and the story is beautifully structured. it’s too early to say Frog is my favorite piece of 2023, but it’ll be a tough one to top.
